Six week class specifically geared towards people who work in emergency situations; First Responders, Firefighters, Police, Nurses and other public settings.
ASL or American Sign Language is the third most common language in the U.S. after English and Spanish.
How do you communicate when you encounter those who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing and/or Non-verbal and use ASL or sign language?
Communication can be critical in the first few minutes with the patient or victim or even in routine traffic stops. How can you obtain basic info such as name, address and emergency contacts? How can you get health info such as is the person diabetic or has a heart condition
This six week course will give strategies and knowledge on basic phrases and ways to assess the situation as well as give and receive vital information needed during an emergency or even just routine occurrences. This class could also help you if you have a friend, relative or neighbor who is Deaf.

Registration with payment is required by April 8.
Fee is $75 for the 6-week class.

Taught by Donna Meadows. Donna Meadows attended American Sign Language (ASL) classes at Clemson University and then enrolled in the Interpreter Program at SCC in South Carolina. After graduation with her focus in the educational setting she began her career as an educational sign language interpreter and has continued in that field for over 10 years. Donna is also a S.O.D.A. (Sibling of a Deaf Adult), and is knowledgeable regarding Deaf Culture through her training and involvement with Deaf communities in South Carolina and Ohio. She began basic sign language classes here at the library last summer and also offers private tutoring to individuals.
