Meet Nelle. She is a living schoolroom of everything you need to know to thrive on your own homestead. Each month you will learn a different hands-on homestead experience.
In this workshop Nelle will give a short introduction to food preservation. She will talk about the steam juicer and other tools for making jelly and jam, the water bath canner, the canning process, why canning is necessary for killing bacteria, which foods can be processed using a water bath canner, and which ones cannot. Participants will learn the basics of getting ready to can, preparing jars and lids for canning (and why we do this).
Learn what pectin is and how it works and the difference between jelly, jam, fruit butter, marmalade, and conserve.
Participants will also learn how to make fruit juice jelly (Concord Grape) and take a small jar home to share with their families.
For ages 14 and up.
